The ICS Federation Council Donates Books To Simons Town School

The Federation Council at their meeting in Dublin agreed to render support to the Simons Town School and they approached Witherby Seamanship International’s Managing Director, Iain Macneil, who promptly agreed to donate 3 full sets of ICS course books to the school.  The weight of 42 books is considerable and so MSC were roped into bringing them across from London on the MSC Venezia. The Cape Town branch of ICS South Africa had the pleasure in handing over the books to Brian Ingpen, a very proud Head of the new Lawhill Maritime Centre. The centre had officially been opened by the Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, in March 2010. The library is very much in need of quality shipping related books and this donation will certainly benefit the students in doing their research.

We used the opportunity to hand over to the five Understanding Shipping scholarship students their course material and to chat with them on what was expected from them in doing the course. All five are determined to go to sea next year, four as deck cadets and the fifth as an engineering cadet. This is certainly encouraging for the South African maritime industry and we wish them all well in their studies and in successfully obtaining berths on merchant ships next year.
